One of the manufacturing facilities I help support has some pretty old equipment (which is not surprising when you work in manufacturing). We have a punch press and a laser that only have the option of communicating via serial port to transfer programs to the machine.We have a dedicated workstation which has been used to transfer programs to these machines via RS-232 that is about to die. Our plan is to do a P2V on the workstation so it can be used for programming only and be better protected against loss. We will put a low-powered workstation running Win 7 64-bit in its place that a programmer would then use to access the VM running the programming software.

The replacement workstation will be connected via RS-232 to the punch and the laser and be used only to transfer program files to the laser and the punch press.The problem is they are using an ancient software called MachineTalk (copyrighted in 1998) to transfer programs to the shop machines via RS-232 right now and don't have the installer. It's simple and easy for them to use.Can someone recommend a free / paid software that would be easy for a programmer to use to transfer punch programs to those machines using RS-232? Something with a GUI is preferred. Even if we can prevent that workstation from taking a dive, we will be out of luck if they lose the ability to send programs to the shop machines.Thanks in advance. The situation with this workstation has changed a bit. I just came to the realization that the software we use for programming actually requires a parallel port dongle to run.

Then there's the serial port program transfer issue on top of it. Facepalm.Now I'm thinking it might be best to get a replacement workstation that has a serial port and a parallel port, put VMWare Workstation on it and use a P2V'd version of the existing workstation for programming as well as program transfer. This seems easier than trying to do a P2V, put the new VM on an ESXi server, figure out how to get a parallel port to work in conjunction with the server and the programming software, then tackle the serial transfer issue, etc.Then I have to figure out how to back up the VM.one way or another. I haven't used these guys but it sounds interesting2) As stated above use a dig port to move that serial port near the target device. Install the virtual com port adapter software in your vmclient.With the above you should be able to add this client to your vSphere infrastructure for backup and redundancy.I had no idea dongles could be virtualized. If that is legit, then this could be a great DR move for us not just for this but for other Engineering applications.
