I have been thinking about Mike Hammer's performance on Fool Us (this link might still work: ) and I don't actually understand what his magical intention was. If he had kept the blindfold on and then done some sort of schtick to pretend he was dressing the doll to match what the guy had drawn, it might have made sense.

But as it was I don't really understand what his 'story' was about what he was doing. Was it that he had predicted what they guy was going to choose? If so, why not keep the blindfold on? Not really sure if I'm making any sense, but I'd be interested to hear if others were similarly vexed by that aspect of his performance.

I think 'thumper' might just be a general term to describe the act of an audience plant audibly alerting the magician to something on stage (in this case color of the marker). I don't think someone was physically stomping their foot, but perhaps a clap, or a certain type of laugh, just something that the magician was specifically listening for.

He had the audience assistant color her shirt, then belt, then hair, then shorts, then socks. No matter what order the markers were pulled in, based on the audible clue, the magician would know what article of clothing to have the assistant color. I wasn't vexed, but the more I think about it, I think I may know why it might have vexed somebody.I think the big problem is actually the climax with the blow-up doll. Ideally, you want the big revelation at the end of the routine to be, well, a revelation - the best case scenario is that the audience has their jaws on the floor in shock and awe. In this particular case, I think a lot of that was eaten up by a reaction of 'wait, he's seriously using a blow-up doll?' - and if that's the first reaction an audience has, the fact that the magician predicted what clothes it should wear becomes secondary at best, irrelevant at worst.I have a feeling that this routine may very well kill in a seedy bar or a strip club, but it really wasn't the right thing for a general audience. I think the problem with taking it off before going in the bag for the doll is that the first though many (most?) people have is: 'Oh, so he's just using lots of dolls'.

He shows the bag empty afterwards, but I feel like a lot of the tension of the climax is lost because its such an obvious method of doing it.But I'm not sure just keeping the blindfold on would be the right way of doing it. Honestly, I just didn't like the routine. The buildup was just so long for something so small. Of course, it might be a great hit with laymen anyway. I think the problem with taking it off before going in the bag for the doll is that the first though many (most?) people have is: 'Oh, so he's just using lots of dolls'.Can't really remember the trick in detail, but a simplified version with 4 colorable areas and 4 different colored pens would yield 4!

= 24 different combinations. So as someone who doesn't know how the trick was done, I definitely didn't think he had that many dolls to choose from (of course I didn't do the math in my head, but I intuitively knew it was a lot). Also it is quite common when I watch magic tricks to think 'well he could just have more options to chose from in the container', so revealing what's inside a container always makes a trick more impressive for me.Edit: Of course I have no idea what most people are thinking - but just giving my perspective as someone who doesn't know the trick. I think that the blow up doll was the crappiest way he could have revealed that he knew what the audience member would draw. It lacked professionalism and was, at the end of the day, quite creepy. Also, the 'Going on a blind date' gag didn't really have much effect on the audience. And I know that the whole joke is that he is horrible and cynical to members of the audience, but he was just mean to that poor guy. Finally, the whole trick itself is one that you'd expect at a kid's birthday party.

I believe he tried to rectify the fact that the trick was childish, by having a blow up doll that certainly reminded some people of something you'd expect to find in a serial killer's basement. But hey, I know that I certainly couldn't perform that trick with the same gusto and character he did in front of Penn and Teller.
